Detour to Programming Destiny

For as far as I can remember, all that I ever wanted to be in life was an engineer; exactly which type of engineer, I wasn’t sure. I first started programming in C and C++ at the age of 15. Although I excelled in programming, I wasn’t quite sold on the idea of becoming a computer programmer. Upon graduation from high school, I decided to attend The Ohio State University where I initially majored in Mechanical Engineering. Unfortunately, after several semesters as a Mechanical Engineering major, I decided that this major was not the best career fit for me. It was at this point of my life where I switched majors to Financial Management, ultimately graduating from college and landing my first job as an accountant.

In the fall of 2015, having worked as an accountant for nearly ten years, my career was very displeasing and unfulfilling. To earn extra cash, I would occasionally work as a Lyft rideshare driver. One day, I picked up a passenger who happened to work in IT. I had discussed my dissatisfaction with my accounting career and expressed my desire to also get into IT field. The passenger recommended that I research coding bootcamps. It was at that moment where I realized that the detour of my life has lead me back to the place where I’ve always belonged, software engineering.
